The boat is now launched and Christened to THU.
She was loaded to a trailer meant to tow cars, and unlaoded at the nearby lake for trials
The mast was lifted and sail was attached
The next day friends were invited to launch and Christen. A speech was held and in she went
A bottle of sparkling wine was broken...
...I christen thee "THU"
Some final check on sails and we headed on first trials
We started with just 3 panels up and lifted more, until we had 5 panels up. That felt enough for the first day. For tacking, tried to use the tricks described by other paradox sailors, turning slowly into wind and trying to have more weight on windward side, as much forward as possible. No success. The second time I tried without any tricks, and it was a success. As were all next tackings.
As we had many people willing to get a test ride, there wasn't much tuning on the sail; but it feels to have good potential.
I made some small adjustments on lazyjacks next day and we had another small outing
Next time I go out, I will try different sheeting setup, as boom gets too much twisted in, and will try to find out where the sail shape needs improvement.
It is not yet possible to make any conclusions on her pointing ability, more trials will have to be conducted for that.

We have been out some more now, 4 times in total; and unfortunately the season for me has ended this year. This summer we also had house renovation going on, so this took most of the time when I should bave been out sailing. I was offered to participate in a very interesting for me project, so had to go to work, faraway from home.
Here some photos
When
out again, I tried different sheeting. As the boom was too much pulled
in, I removed sheetlet from it, and there were just 2 blocks on the boom, one in near
aft end and in forward end of the boom. It helped some what, but there
is still some twist. The next thing to try would be to move the forward
end block to the mast and the aft end one as much forward as possible,
but the wind was very light and would be good to try with a bit more of
wind first.
Twist in boom
When I have time, I try to put together a small video about launching and first tests.
Congratulations! She looks fabulous and with plenty of sail area. Well done. I do wonder how long the junk rig takes to set up before each sail? Shame about the weather etc. Thanks Terry
ReplyDeletewell done a beautiful job. I noticed some plastic piping in some of the later photos, what are these for?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Tony!
DeleteThis is a drain pipe for bilge pump. Could have just gone out through hull side, but at the time I decided to go through transom.
Hi Eerik
ReplyDeleteSuper performance. My Paradox construction is in pause, is only in small steps. You know with certainty my pictures in the yahoo group boat name Manetee. Is yes like your synonymous 20% larger. Question what balast and how much do you have. How is that position
, on your pictures was nothing to see. Günther
Hi Günther,
DeleteIt looks like I have missed thisone. I have seen your pictures, yes, and it looks not too far away. I tested with 240kg of ballast. about 100kg of lead and the rest was water. The lead pigs are still to be cast. I have a compartment just aft from bulkhead 3. You see a narrow panel on the photo of floor. It should take about 220kg. If more needed, will add some water in canisters.
